week 11

Cant believe just one more week an we braking up for Christmas and year is nearly gone. Its been a good one for me, and I hoping to keep same way next year.

This week I went to college just one day, other spending working from home, which again was successful.

VISUAL STUDIES

I am just about finishing my final piece - as it wasn't glitchy enough  decided to add some paint. I been looking trough some illusion artist and some videos of how to create it, but I'm not sure if its suitable for my sculpture. I coloured main face and shoulders black to make it more look like a stone.

Theoretically GLICH is suffer a sudden malfunction or fault.  So I calling my piece  "Bleeding Stone". As stones cant bleed Plaster of Paris bandages looks great and so real that it in best way creates that look I was after. Adding red as fake blood I think I have success here. Probably not as glichy as requested, but I can always manipulate it digitally. I have no much skills in that thou, but I will try. Over all is more or less finished. I need to update my sketchbook and I can hand in all next week, to get it out of the way as I have other assignments to concentrate.

 

STUDY SKILLS

 

It was presentation day. I want it other thing off my shoulders. I did submit my 3000 word oiece so just Presentation was left.

 

Only me and Anna choose to do it, as rest rather doing after New year, which I don't understand, why would you want to leave everything for the last minute and study throughout Christmas.

 

Presentation itself was tough as we needed it to talk about somting we hate or don't like, in my case in art. There is no such a thing. Art these days is crazy yes, but its not for me to judge it. Every artist express himself differently and rather beautiful on his own way. So to find something I dislike was hard, but I did eventually.

 

I decided to talk about  this work ~

 

 Old boring photo from end of 90's era~ photograph made by German visual artist Andreas Gursky.

 

 

It is the most expensive photograph ever sold and that what shocked me the most. 4.3 million dollars for this??!! 

The auction doesn't explain why such a simple, somewhat boring picture would be sold for such a high price, but hey, art is art or is it??!!  I rather think its more a technology, but now days in Auction Houses, photography

has taken another step towards cementing the art form as a medium of major historic and cultural significance. 

With several pieces gaining price tags well over the $1 million mark, photography has a marked impact on art collections throughout the world. Mainly because having distinct features and techniques that cannot be found in any other art form.  Which brings me back to what I already said. It is pure technology.

 

Being photographer myself I cant see it as a masterpiece, but in this case its more that who took a picture, not what is the subject.

 

So yes I did my best to presented audience with my opinion in few words. Not sure if it was good or bad, I mainly improvised, but then I forgot to say what I really wanted and so on. Oh well, better next time.

 

FINE ART

 

As I was going to miss Thursday again I been asked in meantime between to look up Turner prize and its this years winner, to see what my opinion is. I did and oh my... I think I am not very artistically minded and sometimes I doubt if I ever be a true artist as I have not in me the craziness required to be an artists. I like pretty things and I am not sure where that puts me on artists lader...im thinking bottom.

 

This years winner, so as any other previous are quite remarkable artist, but art they represent is not even close what I would like. Strange for me that Prize takes up Turner's name ~ the great British painter, who's works was remarkable and he is one of my favourites. Looking trough the winners, runner ups and some other contestants I am not sure if Turner himself would be pleased to see such art, but there must be something that judges see and I am not. Will be interesting to hear everyone else opinion, I hope I'm not the only one.

 


 

In meantime I been busy working on my canvases, I got several and I sort of engaged in the chain of experiments. Canvases goes trough a lot of pressure and mediums.

 

 

I'm trying to make some of them crack. I read it if you put acrylics over the oils it will crack....no I'm still waiting, solid as gold ... So this is not going how I want, rest is okay more or lees. My final piece is still a mystery to me its all depends when I will decide to stop. Last night I put a sand over my frozen and now it feels like velvet. As having time till January this one is not rush...My red canvas as experimental piece is finished, I don't really want add anything more...its otherwise will be too much.

 

 This is how my room looks like most of the time and it is also my bedroom, well carpet will have to go soon. Now I understand importance of studio space, but that is a distant dream, hopefully one day. It would be so easier if I had a studio space.

  

 

 

 

 

   

 

 

 

 

 ILLUSTRATION

 

As m still  on research part and also been busy finishing off other projects, Illustration is more or less abandoned at the moment, but I will fill in gaps regarding this course next week for sure.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Week 10

Can’t believe I’m on week ten in my studies already, that is nearly half way through my first year.

When you are older you appreciate it more, every assignment comes like a beautiful challenge to test your skills. This is not my first venture in to higher education, but back then I was so young, I didn’t really enjoy my studies, everything was like a pain, where is it now I’m appreciated everything I get to learn.

Parents shouldn’t really force their kids to go to uni as soon as they finish school unless the young person really know what he wants to do. I see so many frustrating, anxious students, not happy with the briefs, assignments. Running late for deadlines etc. … Even if I don’t make it as a fine artist, this is cherished time for me and I enjoy every day of it.

This week flew buy and I am little late with my blog entry, it’s all down to other affairs I have in my life and Christmas not far now. Al this slows the learning process, but luckily, I’m not that far off.

Thursday, I took a day off to work from home and it was more than productive.

VISUAL STUDIES

As we are approaching end of our brief about Glitch I’m in the process of making sculpture. So far, I don’t think is very glitchy, as being normal human there is very hard to make things look wrong.

I used two colour air dry clay, to make a start. As a novice to that it vas interesting to see what I would come up with. I made some drawings initially to get sort of idea what I want. I would call it “in pain”. Strange approach, witch surprises myself. It is definitely a woman and she is not in happy place.

I didn’t really have intention to make it that way, but it somehow happened this way. I also used Plaster of Paris bandage to add extra character and I’m happy how it looks up to know, considering its my first sort of work. Maybe don’t look very professional, but then again, I am not a professional sculpture artist.

It’s not bad, but something missing, so I’m now waiting for it to dry and maybe I will paint over it, not sure yet.

STUDY SKILLS

As last week, there is no lectures left and we are doing independent work mostly. As I got back my work I give in last week for proof reading, I was able to hopefully correct all mistakes in right way and I already submitted it on Canvas.

There is still presentation left which going to be this Wednesday. I haven’t put that together just yet, but hopefully I will manage as I really want this to be done than I can concentrate of two remaining subject submissions after xmas.

FINE ART

As I worked from home, I manage to get messy with several canvases I have here and my day was really productive.

As you can see it was messy work, poor my carpet – it is getting multi coloured by the second.

I was experimenting with some ordinary filler but it dried out quite hard, so I was using sandpaper to polish off over sharp texture. The mess after – you won’t believe and its also my bedroom. 😕

There is no end to it yet, and I still not sure if the pale blue cardboard will work towards my final, bet there is still time and “Frozen” as I call it is required lots of improvements.

Every day, I see inspirations and possibilities what I could apply into my work, sometimes I fail thou - lack of time, sometimes -  lack of experience, sometimes I think I’m in the very dark room looking for door of possible outcome. You don’t become an artist over a night. The joy of learning process comes with its disappointments.

As I’m working constantly on tight budget all my materials are quite cheap and maybe not the best choice for creation I want to achieve. Still it is all learning process in order to create something worth looking at whatever possibilities I may have. It is also a sort of a challenge.

ILLUSTRATION

At the moment, It’s all in my mind. I am re watching some old movies to gain the sense of that time.

So far, I’m thinking maybe not portrait people in it as I really not good at it. Maybe go just for a main object what stories are about.

I do need to start writing everything down and start practising, is just to finding the  time is a challenge.
